What was on my windshield last night

Last night I left the office a little after 6 p.m.

As I strolled out to the car, I was excited because I was headed over to the golf course to meet my babeh for what we call “WE WEDNESDAY”. It’s our date night.

Anyway, as I pulled out of the parking lot, I saw a receipt flapping in the breeze under one of my wipers.

So I pulled over and reached across my windshield to grab what turned out to be a note.

Huh, I thought, that’s odd.

Then I read it.

“Thanks for parking in the lines today.”

Jaw drop. What? I chuckled to myself.

My first thought was,..”The nerve of some people…” Sure, I may not always pay close attention to where I park. But it’s close enough. And what was with this passive-aggressive note?!

I mean, maybe this person doesn’t have anything better to do than keep track of my parking style. For a moment I thought I was being scolded grammar school-style for coloring outside the lines.

Then I had a flash of inspiration. This situation was a great illustration of a key marketing concept. And that’s why I’m sharing it with you today.

You see, our job on earth isn’t to get constant approval, especially as business owners, entrepreneurs, and marketers.

Our job is to stand out from the crowd and be different. When you look to history of successful people and brands, the outside-the-box thinkers are the ones who become hugely successful.

Look at Steve Jobs. Enough said.

Love him or hate him, Howard Stern is the King of all Media. This shock jock changed radio and the entire media landscape.

And Richard Branson has successful companies in many industries built around his powerful Virgin brand. With each, he’s gone against the “old school” ways of doing business and come out on top.

As small business owners we can learn a lot from these pioneers. We may not have millions of dollars for an ad campaign. But we still need to instantly grab the attention of our prospects and customers and share with them what makes us different.
